Traditional Victorian Style Interior Design Ideas

With wealth and security inevitably come a profusion of styles and an irresistible temptation to go over the top: a broad statement, but one borne out by history. In the twentieth century we have to look back no further than to the 1980s to see evidence of this. If we retreat even further - to the mid-nineteenth century - we find perhaps an even finer example.

Victoria was on the British throne, her empire was churning along quite nicely and the rewards of the industrial revolution were being appreciated by a rapidly growing middle class. In the 'workshop of the world', as England was then known, fortunes were being made through trade with the colonies. Add to this newly found wealth and security, a monarch with strong feelings about home and family, and you have all the back-ground ingredients of Victorian style.

With all attention on the home, it was obvious that this was where an individual's status could best be demonstrated to the world at large. The message was loud and clear: 'I have arrived, I have substance and I espouse family values' (sounds familiar?). A great surge in building and urban development ensued, much of which constitutes the English housing stock of today.

The penchant for classical styles was declining, but without any strong, new, directional fashion surfacing, the only way to look was back and to reviving previously popular interior themes (this too has its parallel in the 1980s when shabby-chic country-house eclecticism became all the rage). Gothic, Elizabethan, oriental, Scottish baronial, Egyptian and rococo - these were among the many styles that the Victorians mixed somewhat indiscriminately. When interpreting Victorian style today, you have the choice of jumbling these various furnishing styles within one room or perhaps of concentrating on just one theme in each individual space.

Industrialization had arrived and furniture was produced en masse (but, alas, not always to the highest standard). At least this meant that furnishings cost less and were therefore available to a wider public and in greater abundance. It should be no surprise, then, that house dwellers of the time overdosed on exuberance. The Victorian home is typified by the cluttering of furnishings, layer upon layer. Why stop at one pair of curtains at a window when these can be accompanied by blinds and net drapes too? Every imaginable item was draped, trimmed and bedecked; every inch of floor space crammed with furniture and every table spilt over with memorabilia.

While the dictates of today's decorators may be 'Less is more' or 'If in doubt, leave it out', the byword of their Victorian equivalents was 'More is marvelous'!

Although at the beginning of this long-enduring period (1837-1901) schemes tended to be relatively light in feel, by the turn of the century they had become altogether more somber. Window treatments were designed to restrict light, the decorator's palette took on deeper tones, furnishings became bulkier and dark woodwork dominated. Artificial lighting, despite the arrival of oil lamps followed by gas lamps, did little to brighten interiors. This all sounds rather dull until you remember that the Victorians would dress their rooms according to the season.

Come spring, many of the heavier elements would be replaced or covered by lighter-weight materials in paler colors; then the winter scheme would be re-imposed in the autumn. We adopt this arrangement for our personal clothing, so why not for our rooms?

In Victorian times there was a preciseness that we perhaps lack today with our flexible casual lifestyles. Each room had its definitive purpose and style of decoration. Libraries, drawing rooms and dining rooms tended towards the sumptuous, while upstairs was generally given a lighter, more feminine touch.

How To Choose A Frame For Wall Art

You have an unframed art print or photograph and are in search of the ideal frame for it. Here are some things to consider before you buy.

1. Where will this picture be displayed?

? Most decorators believe the frame should reflect the theme and style of the room.

? The colors of the wall need to be considered. If you want the picture to be noticed, choose a frame that is a contrast color to the wall. Use a darker color frame on a light wall and a lighter color frame on a dark wall.

? Are there other framed pictures already hanging in the same area you will put this new print? If so, the new picture frame should coordinate with the others. Using the same frame with a group of pictures creates a unified look and a more formal look. Using a variety of frames will add interest to the collection and create a more casual, fun look.

2. What kind of frame will work best with the picture?

? What is the theme of the picture? A delicate floral print will look best in a more delicate frame whereas a larger frame would be better with a heavier full garden or landscape picture.

? If the art print is matted, the color of the frame needs to harmonize with the mat. Most of the time you will want the frame to be a contrast to the mat, but not such a big contrast that it becomes the focal point instead of the picture. There might be times when you want the frame to match the color of the mat, especially if the frame has some texture to it. In both cases the artwork will probably look better if both the mat and frame are a contrasting color to the wall.

? What size is the picture? A small picture usually looks best in a small frame, unless it?s been matted to make it larger. And conversely, a large frame usually looks best with a large picture.

3. Is a custom made frame better than a stock (pre-made) frame?

? There is definitely a difference in quality and price, so this is really a personal choice. Things to consider in choosing a pre-made frame are the cost, the quality, the availability of size and style, and the mounting hardware.
o The pre-made frame will cost less than a custom frame.
o Selection and size are limited with the stock frame. If you have an odd sized print, you will probably not be able to find a stock frame to fit, unless you cut it down to a standard size or add a mat to enlarge it to a standard size.
o If you purchase a stock frame and don?t like it with your print, it is easy to return or exchange.
o A stock frame comes with standard quality glass or sometimes plastic. You need to decide if it will be protective enough for your artwork. Of course, you can purchase better, more protective glass and have it cut to fit the stock frame.
o Look at the back of the stock frame to make sure the mounting hardware is suitable for your needs. If the picture is heavy, you will want the sturdier hardware and sometimes you can?t replace what comes with the frame because the raw material of the frame is plastic.
Things to consider in choosing a custom made frame are:
o A custom frame is more expensive than a stock frame
o A custom frame offers you a much larger selection and provides more creative options. You can choose the content, color, width, and style. You can try out a frame against the print to see immediately how it looks. And you can do this with as many frame styles as you want.
o A custom frame allows you to choose the quality of glass you want. There are several choices available, everything from UV blocking to non-glare.
o A custom frame can be cut to fit most any size print. I think there are some limitations based on the length of the full piece of the frame material.
o The custom framing experience can include picking out a custom mat at the same time. If you have a group of pictures that you are wanting to frame similarly, this is a great way to match materials and ensure that what you choose works well with all the prints.
o Custom frame shops usually guarantee their workmanship.
o There are frame shops that offer Do It Yourself (DIY) options to reduce the cost. A skilled employee will cut the mat, frame, glass and backing for you. Then you use their facilities, tools and personal help to put it all together. They even provide the appropriate hanging hardware. When you leave, you have the finished picture, ready to hang. This is my favorite framing method.

Since I am such a visual person, I highly recommend window shopping for both types of frames to get a better idea about what is available before making the final choice. For me the whole process from choosing the art print to hanging it on the wall is a very creative one and highly personal. If you?re not a window shopper, you will have your own criteria for making the final choice. Whatever your method is, I hope this information will be helpful. The goal is to have fun with the experience and let your own creativity be your ultimate guide. After all, it?s your space and it needs to reflect your personality.

The Importance of Fertilization with Potted Plants

If you are relatively new to owning a potted plant, it is important to know that your plant will require regular fertilization. Fertilizer provides nutrients that younger plants (including most potted plants) need to thrive. Another reason for the need for more fertilizer is that the soil in pots does not get revitalized naturally the way soil in nature does. Do not let this fact scare you away from potted plants, however: fertilization can actually be quite easy. The most common way to fertilize your plant is to buy packages of fertilizer in your local garden store. Please follow the directions, as each fertilizer can be different. One type of fertilizer you may want to consider is a type that dissolves in water before you add that water to your plant. This is a great solution because it allows you to take care of two steps in one in regards to caring for your plant.

Silk Plants versus Real Plants

A decision to make as you decorate your home is whether you want to use silk plants and flowers or real ones. There are some great pros and cons to each option. When considering real plants, you want to make sure that the plant can get sunlight and water. Real plants naturally attract insects, which could be a problem where you are living. An advantage to live plants is the green thumb you develop as you care for them and watch them grow. If you are planning to change your greenery based on the seasons, if you like to move furniture and decorations around a lot, or if you yourself may be moving at some point, you will find it easy to store and move silk plants. The biggest factor to look at is how ?life-like? it appears. Many silk plants and flowers are rendered so perfectly that observers cannot tell their authenticity without touching them. The ?clearly fake? look can be quite unattractive.

History of Topiaries

Creating topiary plants has to do with cutting and shaping plants into certain designs. Most often the plants used for topiary purposes are extremely dense. There is almost no end to what can be created: people and animals, geometric shapes, and detailed landscapes and mazes are all common choices. Many people who love topiaries but do not have a place to display a 20-foot shrub choose to decorate their houses with much smaller silk topiaries. Silk topiaries are most often found in offices or churches. Frequently, these topiaries involve a spiral design, which is small and easily displayed but still beautiful.

How Wall Fountains Add Style To Almost Any Business: Three Case Studies

Wall fountains are perhaps the most distinctive interior design elements you can add to a workplace. They combine motion, light and the soothing sound of water to focus casual attention on wherever they?re installed. If you choose the right style for your business you project an elegant, professional image.

Your business? image needs more than a one size fits all d?cor solution, however. This article explores how to pick the right water fountain for your business and how to install it in the most suitable location. Let?s look at specific cases to uncover the right process.

Case #1: Spa

The owner of a spa wants to add a water feature to fit the atmosphere of the spa, where water-based beauty and relaxation treatments are common. The spa also puts a particular focus on natural health. The owner knows that the spa?s spacious change rooms are really the social center of the facility, so she chooses to put her wall fountain there, opting to keep a small tabletop fountain in reception. Instead of choosing a sleek steel design, she looks at slate and stone wall fountains that would better fit the spa?s image as a natural health facility. If she was more interested in a clinical or hygienic feel, steel might have been her first choice instead.

Case #2: Large Office

This business takes up the entire floor of a sizeable office building. This is one branch of a large corporation, but the head office wants each branch to feel distinctive. In this case, the VP on site decides to get two wall fountains: one for reception and one for the boardroom. The office is in a city of about 70,000 people where country life is never far away, so in reception, the VP opts for a wall fountain made of natural stone with an engraving of the company?s logo and the name of the local branch. Anyone visiting gets a taste of this office?s special place in the corporation in a fashion that doesn?t fail to project a powerful, successful image. The boardroom presents a different situation. The VP wants employees to feel connected to the company as a whole, beyond the branch office, so he opts for a smaller glass-faced wall fountain featuring the company?s logo, without the local branch.

Case #3: Office Building

This older office building recently went through a significant facelift, but can?t completely shed its heritage. Worn concrete and brick dominate the architecture. The owner wants a wall fountain to immediately impress upon visitors that the interior is modern and new. Still, he doesn?t want to give the impression that he?s ashamed of the way the exterior looks either, and wants some continuity between interior and exterior styling. He puts the wall fountain in building reception. A newly widened foyer with large, bright windows makes the fountain visible from the outside. He chooses a copper wall fountain, since the metal represents an excellent compromise between old and new ? it?s shiny, but it matches exterior earth tones. The copper is treated to resist greening over time.

Conclusions

As you can see, choosing the right wall fountain for a business boils down to three basic factors: the surrounding environment, the business? image and the effect you want to have on anyone visiting the place. Keep these in mind and it should be easy for almost anyone to pick the best fountain for his or her company?s needs.

Bathroom Interior Design

Any advice or guide on the interior design of a bathroom should be based around one simple concept: keep it simple. Rooms inside of a home should have functional aspects, and if one room is designed for very specific functions, it is the bathroom. There have always been many jokes about the "throne" of a home, but the honest fact is that creating a visibly appealing and comfortable bathroom will inspire positive feelings to its users.

Hardware choices should be the primary concern when designing a bathroom. Faucets and spigots, as well as tubs and toilets, produced in a variety of shapes and materials can centerpiece a design. Open showers are currently popular with the younger upwardly- mobile crowd, and claw-foot bathtubs are almost always considered to be classic and attractive. Evaluate privacy issues first; don't put the toilet and tub too close together.

Is it a possibility to center your bathroom around a favorite theme? The answer is most certainly "yes." Keeping in mind that "less is more" while choosing a decoration pattern that will coordinate with the rest of the home will open many design possibilities.Finding a color or pattern inspiration from simple or small artwork may be the first step toward creating a bathroom masterpiece.

When designing a bathroom's tiling, take the time to shop around through different hardware, decoration and craft stores. The more expensive of the different types of tiles should have durability, aesthetic value, and a non-porous surface. It should be easily cleaned and sanitized, and it needs to install easily without any expensive or caustic glues or cements. Get creative also; all tile in bathrooms need not be made of porcelain.

After the design and production of a space-conscious and attractive bathroom have been completed, focus on decoration accessories to bring out personality and individualism. The bathroom is the most sacred room of any interior, and placing prized possessions on the walls or shelves is an interesting way to bless this special room. Use courageous ideas and do not be afraid to take chances, but above all: keep it simple.

Antiques

What are considered antiques? Antiques refer to distinguished furniture styles which had influenced purchase patterns. Simply put, antiques are well-known designs of the years that passed but are so popular that they are still preferred until today.

Have you ever been to an auction? Do you notice the prices for antiques? That alone should give you an idea why antiques are never a bad choice when it comes to furniture. While there are some who think antiques are overly-priced old pieces with nothing more to offer, majority still believe that antiques are quality furniture.

The dining room can be filled with all sorts of antiques. There are antique dining tables, antique dining chairs, antique sideboards, antique servers, and antique wine coolers. Selections of antique dining furniture are usually made from mahogany, burr walnut, oak, and rosewood.

Since antiques are dearly priced, be doubly careful when purchasing antique dining room furniture. There are many fraud sellers waiting for you to take their bait. If you are getting a cheap antique, it is very possible that you are not buying the real thing. It is best to go to reputable shops. As mentioned before, auctions are one of the good places to look for antiques.
